All persons involved in the handling and transportation of goods which are deemed dangerous require appropriate training.
Dangerous goods fall into one or more hazard classes, depending on the nature of the hazard that they present. These are explained in the table below.
Awareness Training
This is aimed at people who are involved in the handling or storing of dangerous goods, but who are not required to transport them. This could include warehouse staff, lift truck operators and other similar workers.
It is also suitable for drivers who are transporting dangerous goods that do not fall within the scope of the Regulations. This may be due to the way in which the goods have been packaged, or because they are carrying them in insufficient quantities. For example, Diesel is considered “out of scope” of ADR in quantities under 1,000 litres. The quantities and packaging requirements vary from product to product, so it is essential that those dealing with dangerous goods in any quantity seek the appropriate training and advice to ensure safety and compliance.
Training covers the hazards associated with different types of loads, considerations for handling and storing the goods, markings that may be present on them and so on.
ADR Driver Training
For drivers carrying “in-scope” loads, a valid ADR Driver Training Certificate is required. This may cover one or more of the classes detailed below, and can apply to loads being transported in Tanks (e.g. bulk liquid) or “Other than in tanks”, frequently referred to as “Packages” – although it includes anything to which the definition of a Tank does not apply. For example, this could be palletised, containerised and bagged loads, or even loads carried in an Intermidiate Bulk Container (IBC).
We are fully approved and authorised by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) for the delivery of ADR driver training. Candidates attending our courses can also benefit from up to 28 hours of Driver CPC (DCPC) as part of their attendance.
The duration of training depends on what type of certificate is required and can be anything from one day – e.g to add additional classes to an existing certificate – through to five days (covering all standard classes) or seven days for candidates needing all nine classes.
Upcoming ADR Courses
Achievement
Attendees will be required to successfully complete examinations relating to the class(es) they wish to qualify for and the method of transportation (Tanks / Other than in tanks). These are completed electronically, meaning results can be notified within 24 hours of completion.
